Custom herbal formulas for hemorrhoids.
Why hemorrhoids persist despite conventional relief
Hemorrhoids—swollen veins in the rectum and anus—affect millions of people. Topical treatments, rubber band ligation, and suppositories reduce symptoms temporarily, but they address the hemorrhoid itself, not the underlying terrain that produces it. Pain subsides. Bleeding stops. Then, months or years later, the condition returns, often worsening.
In classical Chinese medicine, hemorrhoids are never a local problem. They are a sign that the terrain—the digestive, circulatory, and constitutional patterns that govern the lower body—has become compromised. That terrain can be restored through herbal medicine, diet, and lifestyle adjustment.
The classical patterns behind hemorrhoids
Damp-Heat descending to the lower jiao (湿热下注). This is the most common pattern in hemorrhoidal bleeding and discomfort. Damp-Heat—a combination of pathogenic moisture and inflammatory heat—accumulates in the Spleen and Stomach, then descends to the lower jiao (the lower abdomen and rectum). The heat inflames the rectal tissues and blood vessels. The dampness creates stagnation and heaviness. The result: bleeding, pain, swelling, and a sensation of heat and moisture in the rectum. This pattern is often triggered by diet—excessive spicy or fried foods, alcohol, sugar, and processed foods all generate Damp-Heat.
Spleen Qi deficiency failing to govern Blood (脾气虚不摄血). In Chinese medicine, the Spleen is responsible for holding Blood within the vessels. When Spleen Qi is weak—due to poor diet, chronic illness, or constitutional tendency—Blood escapes from the vessels, producing hemorrhoidal bleeding. This pattern often develops after a period of heavy bleeding (whether from hemorrhoids or other causes), as loss of Blood depletes Spleen Qi further. Patients with this pattern tend to have pale complexion, fatigue, loose stools, and a tendency to bruise easily. The bleeding may be copious and is often bright red.
Qi stagnation and Blood stasis (气滞血瘀). Prolapsed hemorrhoids, chronic swelling, and hard lumps at the anus suggest stagnation of Qi and stasis of Blood in the lower abdomen and rectum. This pattern often develops over years of straining, sedentary work, or repeated hemorrhoidal episodes. The tissues become congested, dark, and difficult to move. Patients report pain, a sensation of bulging or heaviness, and tenderness that worsens with sitting or straining.
Constitutional heat in the Large Intestine (大肠热). Some patients are constitutionally prone to heat in the Large Intestine—they tend toward constipation, dry stools, and anal fissures alongside hemorrhoids. This pattern is common in people who run warm, prefer cold drinks, and have a history of inflammatory conditions. The heat dries fluids and creates inflammation, while the dryness produces straining and further trauma to hemorrhoidal tissue.
Hemorrhoids are a sign that the lower body has lost its ability to contain, cool, and move fluids. Herbal medicine restores that capacity.
How classical herbal formulas address the root
Rather than shrinking the hemorrhoid or numbing the pain, our formulas work systematically to address the patterns that produce it:
- Clear Damp-Heat — Herbs like coptis root (黄连, huáng lián), sophora flower (槐花, huái huā), and gardenia (栀子, zhī zǐ) drain pathogenic heat and moisture from the lower jiao. This reduces inflammation, bleeding, and the sensation of heat and heaviness.
- Strengthen Spleen Qi and governance of Blood — Herbs like white atractylodes (白术, báo zhú), Chinese jujube (红枣, hóng zǎo), and astragalus (黄芪, huáng qī) tonify the Spleen and restore its holding function. This stops bleeding, reduces bruising, and builds constitutional resilience.
- Move Qi and dissolve stasis — Herbs like carthamus flower (红花, hóng huā), peach kernel (桃仁, táo rén), and bupleurum (柴胡, chái hú) gently circulate Qi and Blood, reducing congestion and hardness. This eases pain and helps prolapsed tissue retract.
- Moisten and soften the Large Intestine — Herbs like sesame seed (黑芝麻, hēi zhī ma), hemp seed (火麻仁, huǒ má rén), and albumen (百合, bǎi hé) restore fluidity to the bowel, preventing straining and further trauma. This is crucial for long-term healing.
- Address the constitutional condition — Our formulas are customized to your individual terrain. If you run hot, we cool you selectively. If you are depleted, we tonify. If you are stuck, we move. This precision is why herbal medicine succeeds where generic remedies fail.
What treatment looks like
You will receive a custom herbal formula—either as a powder (taken with warm water 1–3 times daily) or as whole herbs (simmered to make a decoction). Most formulas are adjusted every 2–3 weeks based on your response and changing symptoms.
Typical timeline:
- Week 1–2: Pain and heat sensation usually decrease. Bleeding may slow. You may notice improved energy or digestion.
- Week 3–6: Swelling and hardness begin to resolve. Prolapse, if present, starts to improve. Bowel function normalizes.
- Week 6–12: The hemorrhoids continue to shrink and soften. The terrain becomes more resilient. Bleeding typically stops.
- Month 3+: Maintenance formulas prevent recurrence. Many patients find they can sustain health with occasional preventive herbs and dietary adjustments.
Alongside the formula, you will receive guidance on diet, fluid intake, exercise, and stress management—all critical to preventing recurrence. Many patients discover that simple dietary changes (removing spicy foods, increasing vegetables and water, reducing alcohol) have profound effects on their symptoms.
When to seek in-person care
If your hemorrhoids are severely prolapsed, bleeding heavily, or causing intense pain—or if you have any concern about the diagnosis—please consult a licensed healthcare provider in person. - Prefers herbal medicine to ongoing topical treatment or surgery
Rootworth’s custom formulas work because they are built on your individual terrain. We do not offer a one-size-fits-all hemorrhoid remedy. We offer a partnership in restoring the digestive, circulatory, and constitutional health that allows your body to heal itself.
